In terms of Web 2.0 applications, Facebook has dominated the social networking scene and took the Internet by storm. More social interaction takes place on Facebook now than ever before, and marketers are taking advantage of that to expose their audience to their business and products. If you aren’t using Facebook to get the word out about your business, you’re simply losing on the opportunity to reach out to a wide market of millions of active users. There’s no doubt that Facebook is the most popular tool to communicate with your social circle, which is why people spend a large amount of time to stay in touch with friends, make new contacts, play online games and join various groups of interest. Now, imagine your message being displayed to such active set of people. Not only will more folks know what you are offering, it will bring you higher traffic totals before you know it. In this article we will be looking into how you can use Facebook to market your product/service and get results.

Once Facebook reached a couple million users, they began to monetize their service. They launched a service called Social Ads that lets you display targeted ads on Facebook. If you want, you can also add a relevant picture to your ad, something that you shouldn’t ignore. You’ll be able to increase the trust factor and the appeal of your ad, making it more responsive.

There are more ways to advertise on Facebook beyond their Social Ads option. One of these is by starting interest pages or groups for your market. It is a virtual viral phenomenon for Facebook users to add pages that they are fans of, or join groups for which they hold an interest. You should be able to tap into this phenomenon and use it to promote your business. Simply establish a page or group on Facebook about your company and include pertinent information about it; however, be careful not to be too verbose. Influence others to become a fan of your business or join your company’s Facebook group. You can invite other Facebook users to become a part of your group page but your personal page is not set up for this kind of marketing. In this instance, you can use other means of advertisement to divert visitors there. Whether you create a group or a page is up to you but in the end, the kind of response you get will be amazing, if you get everything right.

There are no signs that the popularity of Facebook is waning, so now is the time to get in on the action. There is an ever growing user base that is intimately involved in the network. However, there is still a chance to get in on the competition before it becomes too difficult to make inroads on this useful platform.

Marketing as an activity is all about reaching the right customers with the right products, and the result sought is delighted customers who are more than willing to open their purses wide enough to boost your revenues. For many years, marketers stalked their target customers through various means and by trying to get their message across to spread awareness about their wares.

Traditional Means of Communication

Traditionally, marketing communications were conducted via print, broadcast and such traditional media through disruptive advertising, where advertisements appear in between the content of interest for the customer.

Traditional media does give a large reach to a marketer with its programming of mass appeal. However, the wastage is equally high, since a large portion of the audience would belong to a different segment than the one that is to be targeted by the marketer.

Enter Social Media and the Internet

The revolution stirred by the internet as a medium took place because of the fact that it is highly personalized and provides more content on-demand than any other available medium. Social sites proliferated far and wide in their usage for a few simple reasons:

The power to create and distribute content is equally available to every user, irrespective of him/her being a customer or a marketer. In the earlier forms of media, that power rested with the editorial staff of the channel or the advertiser, but hardly ever with the user.
The medium is completely personalized, and a user can create or join groups and further create content based on what he/she likes.
Opinions are free and fair. This is one reason why social media is of utmost concern to marketers, since buying decisions are no more influenced as much by advertisements. The traditional word-of-mouth marketing approach has grown leaps and bounds on social networks.

Facebook – At the Center of Social Media

With 500 million (and growing) unique users worldwide, Facebook is the number one social networking site in terms of activity and subscriptions. What started as a garage initiative by Mark Zuckerberg has now become the biggest phenomenon on the internet.

A user interface that allows for quick communication and the ability to create fan pages and groups at the click of a mouse button are what make Facebook extremely popular. Another important reason for its immense popularity is the wide variety of social applications that have been developed and made available within the Facebook environment.

These applications can allow users and friends to do joint activities like playing games that run endlessly, sharing photos, videos, and web links, and many more.

How does this help a marketer?

Traditionally, media plans were drawn to include television channels, publications, or any other media that can grab maximum eyeballs and effectively reach a selected target audience. The science of segmentation and targeting has become only more accurate in the case of social media.

Facebook provides a wide variety of avenues to communicate with the audience, which opens up an entirely different world of possibilities to have a fruitful dialogue with customers. Some of these methods used popularly by marketers are:

Advertising: The first opportunity, which is the most obvious one, is advertising on Facebook. The difference, however, is the fact that you can create your own advertisement in a matter of minutes and also specify the details of your target group in terms of demographics and types of discussions where you want your advertisement to appear.
Fan Pages: Facebook allows every brand, as well as individual users, to create fan pages for their favorite celebrities and their own homegrown businesses. Large brands have also created their official pages on Facebook that have a huge, immediate fan following around the world. The fan page has immense utility to convey first hand information about the brand and also to collect immediate and frank feedback from your customers.
Branded applications: One of the most effective ways to engage a user toward your brand is by creating an application; this could be a game or a contest, with your branding coming across subtly through it.

What makes Facebook even more exciting is the way it allows you to target your communication sharply just to the customer segment you want to attract. It also provides analytics and page insights that give good feedback and measurement on the activity done.

The options provided by Facebook can be creatively explored and used judiciously for bringing about maximum benefits to any brand.

However, while doing all this, you need to be aware of the fact that customers have an equal say and have the ability to respond immediately to any of your actions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. What is a conversion tracker?

A conversion tracker is a piece of code that enables advertisers track the number of people who take a specific action.

How is this related to Facebook advertising?

When someone clicks on your ad on Facebook and you have installed the new tracking code on your website, you will now get the results of how many people took a particular action.

That action could be purchasing products, signing up to a newsletter or any other measurable action on your website.

Your return on investmentJust like in the real world, you need to track your ROI on your marketing dollars. Advertising on Facebook should be no different.

That is why I believe advertisers will take Facebook marketing more seriously and increase their ad spend with Facebook.

Many businesses advertise in a number of places on the Internet. Results need to be measured.

My issues with the tracking code

One issue is that it can only track one action. If you installed the tracking code on your newsletter thank you page, each person that signs up would be counted as a conversion.

If you also installed it on your shopping cart thank you page, this would also be counted as a conversion.

You can obviously see that these two types of conversions have very different values and provide a different return on investment for your marketing dollars.

Google Analytics is a little bit smarter where you can provide a dollar value for each action performed. It can read the amount that your customer purchased and add that to your conversion value.

Facebook business is becoming fast popular. But the Facebook marketing strategy needs to be a correct one in order for your business to be in the proper direction. Driving the crazy and huge Facebook traffic into your website blog can be tricky. If you keeping posting news feed on the walls of the friends or others, it can get very intrusive and you can be tagged as a spammer and again Facebook is a closed social networking system, where communication is possible only through approval.

Create your own profile make it personal not heavily loaded with your business information only. Make it look like business is just another part of your profile not the entire of it. Let people know about your likes, dislikes as well as hobbies etc.

Add people who can be linked to your business in some way or the other. Decide on the groups you wish to target, who may be interested in your niche and business. Send them friend requests with an amiable message attached to it, by doing this you are more like to get more people accepting your friend requests. Facebook gives you the opportunity to keep only 5,000 friends so be careful not to keep adding people irrelevantly.

Join groups where you think you may find people with interest in your blog. These are the places which allow you to post whatever you wish to and you may make indirect references to your business.

You could also create a group suited to your niche and invite the Facebook friends to join it. You can post information about your business and blog in here this builds your business reputation and your status in your niche. This is a very powerful Facebook marketing strategy as people start seeing you as guru in your niche and start trus you making them more likely to buy from you. Also once you create your own group you can send private messages to all the members of the group, this is basically like e-mail marketing but the messages are much more likely to be read and opened.

You can minimally fill the wall of your friends and yours with videos and articles that are significant to your business and if others find it interesting they can be shared and spread like a wild fire.

A very effective facebook marketing strategy is to tag your Facebook friends in the videos that you post.

Facebook allows Internet users to form communities online quickly and easily, from groups of friends to business networks. These networked individuals groups often in similar demographic groups has become a virtual goldmine for internet marketers who can place their message in front of members of their target market on social networking sites for little or no cost.

Social networking sites like Facebook has been a slight abuse of Internet marketing tool that compels social networking sites to crack down on new types of spam.This spam is a result of people artificially inflate “friend” count (the number of other members of their social networks) via the mass-adding and bots. These profiles owners will then promotes their own products, or charge others to get their URLs blown to bulletin board thousands of other members.

Reason Social Networking Spam does not work.

In short, social networking spam does not work. That’s not to say there will be no transition of marketing efforts, but rather that it very rarely would provide an adequate return on investment compared to other marketing tactics. Here’s why:

1st Huge social networking accounts are rarely filled with targeted members. Therefore, they will see the message not likely be members of the target market (unless someone placing something like a MySpace resource site, or a band marketing to legitimate fans, there are two exceptions to the rule)

2nd Many of these paid positions (often in the “bulletin” form) is very visible in limited quantities, based on post time and only when a member is logged in. Therefore, most members blasted will never even see the message.

3rd Although targeted members of a market may look modest, actually open the message and actually read it, there are still historically very low response rate common in most direct marketing methods.

6 steps to use Facebook to effective Internet Marketing

1. Create a highly targeted friend list, rather than using bots.

2. Personally welcome any new members of the network, or at least as many people as possible.

3. Time newsletters and letters to members of the target market is likely to be online.

4. Offer something of value (such as news and exclusive information) of the posts rather than just sending links.

5. Contact members regularly to keep the message in front of them, but do not overdo it, to the point of looking like a spammer.
